Delta Airlines Service Animal Rules — AirHelpLive Guide

Delta Airlines follows strict federal regulations and guidelines regarding traveling with trained service animals to ensure a safe, comfortable journey for all passengers. Here’s what you need to know about Delta’s service animal rules in 2025.

Eligibility and Definition

  • Only trained service dogs that are specifically trained to assist a person with a disability are accepted as service animals.

  • Service animals in training are not eligible, except if traveling with a professional trainer.

  • Emotional support animals are not recognized as service animals by Delta and must follow pet travel rules.

Documentation Requirements

  • U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Service Animal Air Transportation Form:
Must be completed and submitted to Delta at least 48 hours before departure.

  • For flights longer than 8 hours, passengers must also submit a Relief Attestation Form stating that the animal can relieve itself in a sanitary manner or will not need to during the flight.

  • If booking less than 48 hours before departure, passengers may present the forms at check-in or the gate.

Health & Behavior Requirements

  • All service animals must be fully vaccinated and at least 4 months old.

  • Animals must be under the handler’s control at all times, well-behaved, and not pose a threat to others.

  • Animals must fit within the footprint of the passenger’s seat (floor space) and cannot block aisles or other passengers’ space.

  • Delta will deny boarding if the animal displays aggressive or inappropriate behavior.

Seating and Boarding

  • Passengers traveling with service animals must have assigned seats prior to travel.

  • Animals must be seated on the floor (not in seats) in the passenger’s foot space or lap.

  • Passengers with service animals may request pre-boarding to arrange seating and get settled.

  • Larger service animals or multiple service animals may require re-accommodation to comply with FAA regulations.

Limitations and Other Notes

  • A maximum of two service dogs per flight is accepted.

  • Delta has lifted breed bans for pit bull-type dogs traveling as service animals, provided they meet behavior and documentation requirements.

  • Service animals can travel in all cabins, including Delta One, Business, and First Class.
